Buy Exotic Pets

If you are a person that likes the unusual and are bored of just the common household pet, an exotic pet may be what you need. Exotic pets are challenging, interesting and fun. So what exactly is the definition of an exotic pet? An exotic pet is any pet that is not your regular run of the mill pet like a dog or cat. There are however certain species of ‘regular’ pets that are considered exotic - usually very rare species.

They are otherwise known as non-traditional pets. It would be impossible to name all varieties of exotic pets that there are, but here is a list of the more common types of exotic pets:

  • Pet monkeys (not legal in some countries)
  • Hamsters
  • Parrots
  • Turtles
  • Lizards
  • Turkeys
  • Exotic cats
  • Spiders
  • Frogs
  • Snakes
  • Hedgehogs

Before you buy an exotic pet consider why you really want one. If you want it just for the cool factor to show off to your family and friends, please reconsider. Exotic pets take a lot of work. They may need special accommodation, food and attention.

  • If you truly desire an exotic pet and feel that you have the time and money to devote to it, then by all means, buy an exotic pet. However, first you must do your research. Study everything you can find on the pet that you desire. Another important point to remember before buying your pet is to make sure that it is legal. Some areas will not allow you to house certain types of exotic pets. Here are some good points to keep in mind when buying an exotic pet.
  • The pet as an adult. Sure they may be cute and cuddly when a baby, but take into consideration the size they will be as an adult. Larger pets need more space and may be more difficult to handle.
  • Sociability. What do you want in a pet? Do you want one that likes to be around people and handled frequently or do you want one that is happier without regular handling?
  • Feeding requirements. Exotic pets may require specialized food. Do you have a regular supplier of the food your pet needs? Some require fresh foods that are prepared daily.
  • Housing. Take into consideration what type of housing your pet needs.
  • Expense. Often the housing, food, supplies and veterinary care are more than the cost of the animal itself. Be sure you are prepared for the monetary commitment of an exotic pet.
  • Consider your long term plans. If you move or are planning on going away for an extended period of time, will you still be able to take care of your pet?
  • Compatibility with children. This is very important. Make absolutely sure that your pet would be safe around children.
  • Compatibility with other pets. Consider the other pets that you may have in your home. Will your new pet be able to adjust to the other animals in the household?
  • Veterinary Care. See if you have access to vet care before buying your exotic pet.
  • Longevity. Take into consideration that some pets live a very long time and are a lifetime commitment. They may even outlive you.
  • Destructive tendencies. Keep in mind that some pets like to chew, dig and scratch. They may require significant training.
  • Health concerns. Some animals can carry diseases that can be transmitted to humans. Be very careful when choosing a pet if there are other household members that are vulnerable to infections.
  • Potential danger from the pet. Some exotic pets can be aggressive, toxic or downright dangerous. Don't choose a pet in this category.

An exotic pet, like any other pet, can give you many years of enjoyment and companionship. Make sure you have everything he needs before you bring him home. Once you are ready, go buy your exotic pet!
